Once upon a time, in a village lived an old man. He was renowned and respected for hundreds of kilometers around; everyone knew him, admired him, and envied him because, in his youth, he had ventured to a gold mountain and mined a great deal of gold. One day, a group of 500 young men, led by a fellow named Xiao Ma, sought out the old man to ask for the secret to mining gold. Touched by their sincerity, the old man told them: "To reach the gold on the mountain opposite, you must pass three trials. The first: at the foot of the mountain lies a river teeming with crocodiles. You must wade across, but the crocodiles will devour those who try. The second: after crossing the river, you will hike to the mountainside. By nightfall, you will be exhausted and need to sleep, but black bears will appear and eat those who fall asleep. The third: early the next morning, after climbing for two or three more hours near the summit, just before sunrise, the mountaintop will glitter with gold—it will be everywhere. But a fire dragon will appear at any moment and consume those who become obsessed with gathering the gold."
However, Xiao Ma and the young men, undaunted, declared they were not afraid. They were willing to risk death for the chance to obtain gold. Moved by their determination, the old man gave Xiao Ma three embroidered pouches, instructing him not to open them until they faced each trial.
The next day, Xiao Ma led the 500-strong team, full of passion and high spirits, toward the Gold Mountain. Upon reaching the river, they saw the mountain opposite shimmering with gold. Each person thought, "That gold will be mine," completely ignoring or forgetting about the crocodiles in the river. The group rushed into the water, eager to cross quickly. But soon, screams echoed. Remembering the old man's words, Xiao Ma opened the first pouch. It read: "Wait until the crocodiles are full before you cross." As a result, only half of the team successfully made it across. Yet, those remaining were still filled with fervor, dreaming of returning home the next day laden with shining gold.
They continued their ascent. By the time they reached the mountainside, it was deep into the night. Exhausted, they set up tents and fell asleep. Suddenly, black bears appeared and devoured those sleeping soundly. Xiao Ma took out the second pouch. It said: "Whenever everyone else is asleep, you must not sleep." The next morning, only 88 people remained to continue toward the summit.
After climbing for another two or three hours, just before sunrise, they neared the mountaintop. Seeing it ablaze with gold, they rushed to the summit and became engrossed in gathering the treasure. Suddenly, the fire dragon appeared, consuming those who were obsessed. Xiao Ma quickly opened the third pouch. It simply said: "Run." In the end, only 25 people returned, carrying a small amount of gold.
Upon their return, they thanked the old man for his ingenious advice contained in the pouches. The old man said, "Perhaps there was never any gold at the top of the mountain at all. The gold along the way was merely to lure more people to charge toward the peak."
